Dr. Edwards is a licensed Clinical Psychologist (California License Number: PSY35689). Dr. Edwards obtained his Masters in Marriage, Family, and Child Therapy from the University of Phoenix, followed by a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Edwards specializes in addressing behavioral and mental health issues faced by individuals across their lifespan, including but not limited to Anxiety, Depression, Crisis Intervention, and Interpersonal or Social Problems and Dysfunction.
Dr. Edwards brings a wealth of experience to his practice, having worked with diverse populations in the California Department of Corrections Rehabilitation Mental Health Program, prison and community in-patient and outpatient hospitals, and private practice. His services have reached individuals, couples, and families of diverse populations from different ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Dr. Edwards' treatments cover a broad spectrum, from mood disorders to psychological issues, such as Schizophrenia and other Psychoses. His work has spanned across various age groups and settings, including children, adolescents, adults, couples, families, inmates, and parolees. Dr. Edward's areas of study include but are not limited to child psychology, behavioral psychology, cognitive psychology, geriatric psychology, health psychology, forensic psychology, occupational psychology, and neuropsychology.
Dr. Edwards's primary goal is to facilitate healing, change, issue resolution, goal achievement, and recovery from mental or physical health challenges. He accomplishes this by identifying and diagnosing psychological, emotional, or behavioral health issues and then developing and implementing treatment plans and a therapeutic process that helps the client define goals and a plan of action for achieving psychological and personal growth. Dr. Edwards employs an eclectic therapeutic approach, integrating various therapeutic modalities to address each patient or client's unique needs. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that helps people manage mental health issues. CBT is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems, including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies, CBT has been demonstrated to be as effective as, or more effective than, other forms of psychological therapy or psychiatric medications. CBT involves identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. CBT aims to help people think more clearly and control their thoughts and behaviors, which can lead to a better quality of life.
Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) is a short-term, goal-oriented therapy approach that focuses on identifying and building upon a client's strengths and resources to construct solutions for their current challenges rather than dwelling on the problems themselves. It emphasizes the present and future, encouraging clients to envision a desired future and actively work towards achieving it by utilizing their existing capabilities. SFBT helps clients find and implement solutions to their problems as quickly as possible. The client is considered the expert on their own life and is actively involved in setting goals and identifying solutions.
The goal of psychodynamic therapy is to help you understand how your past experiences influence your current thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This therapy can assist you in gaining self-awareness, improving your relationships, and managing your emotions. The psychodynamic approach focuses on unconscious processes as they are manifested in a person’s present behavior. This enables the client to examine unresolved conflicts and symptoms that arise from past dysfunctional relationships and manifest themselves in the present. The main goals of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy are to (1) enhance the client’s self-awareness and (2) foster understanding of the client’s thoughts, feelings, and beliefs associated with their past experiences, especially their childhood.
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a counseling approach that helps people make positive changes in their lives. It's a collaborative, evidence-based style that focuses on assisting people discover their motivation to change. In a supportive manner, a motivational interviewer encourages clients to talk about their need for change and their reasons for wanting to change. The role of the interviewer is mainly to evoke a conversation about change and commitment. The interviewer listens and reflects on the client’s thoughts so that the client can hear their reasons and motivations expressed back to them. Motivational interviewing is generally short-term counseling that requires just one or two sessions, though it can also be included as an intervention along with other, longer-term therapies.

The primary goal of therapy is to assist individuals gain insight into their thoughts and emotions, develop coping mechanisms, and ultimately facilitate positive changes in their lives, leading to improved mental well-being and quality of life by addressing issues that may be causing distress or hindering their functioning.
The length of therapy varies greatly depending on the individual and their specific needs but typically lasts anywhere from a few months to a year or more, with most people attending weekly sessions that last around 45-50 minutes each session; some may only need a few sessions while others may require longer-term therapy depending on the severity of their issues.
Confidentiality is both a legal requirement and an ethical obligation. California laws protect the confidentiality of mental health information. The ethics code specifies limitations for situations in which confidentiality can be broken. What we discuss in therapy sessions is confidential. The law in the State of California mandates that information may be appropriately shared when the following conditions exist: If the client presents an imminent threat of harm to yourself or others. When there is an indication of abuse of a child, dependent adult, or elderly adult abuse. Then confidentiality can be broken.
During a therapy session, you can expect to openly discuss your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with your therapist, who will actively listen and ask questions to understand your situation, challenges, and goals; they may also guide you through exercises or techniques to assist you in working through issues and developing coping mechanisms, all within a confidential environment where you can feel safe to share openly.
Therapy is working when you notice improvements in your mood, thinking, behaviors, and relationships. You might also feel more empowered and hopeful and have a greater sense of life satisfaction.
If you experience a crisis between therapy sessions, the most important thing to do is reach out to your therapist immediately and let them know what's happening; if it is a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or a crisis hotline like 988 right away.
We understand that life can get in the way of scheduled appointments. We ask that you provide us with at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Otherwise, you will be charged a $75 cancellation fee.
